Step 2: Open Your Claim Status
From the main menu:

- Choose the claim you want to review.
Step 3: Download Your Decision Letter
Look for the section labeled:
- “Download Your Decision Letter", or
- “Decision Letter”, located under the Files tab.
Your official decision letter will typically be a multi-page document in PDF format. This document is often 15–25 pages, or longer.
How to Confirm You Have the Right Document
A true decision letter includes:
- Your name and VA file number.
- A list of each condition decided.
- “Entitlement” or “Decision” sections.
- Evidence analyzed.
- Detailed reasoning for approvals or denials.
If your document does not include these sections, there's a very high chance it may not be a decision letter.
Common Documents That Are NOT Decision Letters
These are often confused with decision letters:
- “Request for Evidence” notifications.
- “VA Needs More Information.”
- Scheduling letters for exams.
- Confirmation of submitted forms.
If you are unsure, feel free to upload the file to your VetClaims account portal (click here to access). Our team will review it and provide more information.
